It’s My Life Not Yours!

Few months back an engineer from Tamilnadu went missing and his dead body was later found near a bush in a riverside. His wife of five months, a final year M.B.B.S student, whom he married against the wishes of her parents’, lodged a complaint against her family sensing a foul play. After a week, the police arrested her father and brother with enough evidence, to which they eventually confessed. One can imagine the plight of the poor girl who lost her loving husband within 5 months of married life and now testifying against her own father and brother.

In those days, most of the people stayed in their own village and served in nearby localities. So, the character of a person was well known to everyone. But in today’s modern life, the system of arranged marriage seems to be odd and innumerable couples are living fake lives for the sake of others. I am unable to comprehend why do parents insist that their children have no right to marry a person of their choice? Don’t they have faith in the choice of their children?

In an arranged marriage, one might luckily get a likeminded partner but that's not the case in every arranged marriage. Many times people end up with partners who are a total contradiction to their expectations, and thereby resulting in a superficial relationship or failed marriages. And in such cases one can only imagine the horror of sharing a life with a complete stranger and feel the pangs of a broken marriage, a broken family...and the innocent lives that it shatters.

Every individual must have the liberty to choose his/her own partner; after all, it is the individual who will spend the rest of his/her life with the person he/she chooses. Life is too short to mess it up with a wrong partner as one cannot go for trial and error method in marriages.

  1. This is one thing that drives me crazy, why would you kill someone, you sister just got married to him, think about the pain she will go through and the boy's family.
This as immature as one can get. I don't know what rage they experience to do something like that.
    Very sad.

  8. Marriage is the union of not only two persons. It is a union of two families in the existing society. And its nothing to do with arrange or love. I support both the marriages but, the children should also understand their own family's nature as well as background, as they know by themselves,so they also should know the consequences ahead. If one knows how to love someone, one should also know how to sacrifice even to leave that person for good. Loving one another doesn't mean that they should stay together. The unwanted things happens in our society sometimes, because of the differences of two generations- old and new or modern. So both old and the new should understand each other that without the old, there will be no new and without the new there will be no generation. so both sides should follow the policy of give and take for the future.

  10. The world has changed so much.. and this change is important for everyone to better living..The society had transformed to a great extent and in fact why would it not...change is the necessity to make life better lived and for better living.
Your article on this, brought a great shock that our society hasn't changed a bit.
The narrowness in the mindset should be immediately eradicated. The place to evil action should be completely rule out. The world has changed so much and we cannot see a great future with narrow mindset. Respect the individual decision and choice.Everyone is unique in choices and taste so its high time to let live.
Its very important to respect individual's decision and choice to marriage ,career and lifestyle. we should not cage anyone just because they are parents or elders.
And marriage is not an exception that parents should go about deciding. union of two souls with great compatibility is what necessary in marriage and elders cant experiment with it...!!
    with regards,
    liten
